We learn a new letter each day. We learn what it looks like, the name, the sound it makes and how to form it. We follow the programme Jolly Phonics. See the youtube video below.
High frequency words
We learn high frequency words such as 'the', 'it', 'go'. It is essential that we learn to read and spell these words for fluent reading and writing. Follow the link below to see the first 100 high frequency words list. http://www.highfrequencywords.org/hfw100fp.pdf
Writing
We are learning to use our knowledge of letter sounds to 'sound out' words. We record the sounds that we can hear. We are also learning to use finger spaces between words and to find and copy high frequency words such as 'the', 'here', 'go'.

Daily Reading
Each day, your child will bring home a reading book that he or she has read at school with me or chosen from their book box. At this stage we are focusing on talking about the pictures and using them to get clues about what the words might say. We are also beginning to look at high frequency words such as ‘the’, ‘I’, and ‘am’. Talking about the stories and enjoying them together is the most important aspect of reading at home at this stage. Please let me know if you have any questions or would just like to discuss this further. Enjoy!
Reading for pleasure
It is important that children learn to select books that interest them. Each day the children read independently and with their peers. They talk about the pictures and tell the stories from memory. This is a wonderful opportunity for them to develop their oral language and love of books!
